Foreword and Introduction
It is our pleasure to introduce you to the third edition of the Advocis Best Practices Manual .
Built on a solid foundation of codes of conduct and ethics, the Advocis Best Practices Manual is designed to be a continuously evolving tool for
all financial advisors regardless of practice discipline. This edition provides greater focus on the impact of regulation to the financial advisor's
practice. There's enhanced information on the planning processes and additional tools to keep advisors on the leading edge of compliant
practices.
We believe the Best Practices Manual should be a source of immediate and practical solutions to the problems facing financial advisors. Our
members are financial advisors licensed to distribute life and health insurance, investment funds and other securities products. Advocis
members provide financial and product advice to over 12 million Canadians across a variety of distinct areas, including: Retirement Planning;
Cash Flow Management; Investment Planning; Estate Planning; Tax Planning; Risk Management; and Employee Benefits Planning. We are
committed to developing and making available to our membership skills development workshops and programs designed to assist advisors
with the implementation of the concepts and tools contained within the Best Practices Manual .
The top four goals of this manual are to:
- elevate the professionalism of the financial advice giving delivery process;
- assist advisors with their profitability and business structures;
- provide an overview of current regulations impacting the advisor's practice; and
- reduce E&O claims exposure through education, understanding and compliance friendly processes.
It has been designed to be of use to all financial advisors regardless of tenure, practice discipline or distribution model. Everyone is sure to
find this practical information very helpful.
The Best Practices Manual provides financial advisors with a central point of reference for how to conduct various aspects of their practice. We
recognize that not all subjects can be treated in a like fashion, and readers will find some areas covered in greater depth than others. We
have made every effort to provide useful forms, work samples and templates to help advisors implement the tools outlined. The templates, in
MS Word format, are also found under the member-only Best Practices section of the Advocis website. We fully expect them to be tailored to
suit each individual situation. Members can download them at www.advocis.ca.
The Financial Planners Standards Council™ (FPSC) released their Practice Standards in October 2003. As of April 2005 all CFP-designated
advisors in Canada are required to abide by these standards. The Practice Standards are the result of a comprehensive development effort
begun in 2001, led by the FPSC, with extensive industry consultation. They are the logical next step in a continuous journey that began with
the formation of the FPSC in 1995.
